Juvenile Detained Following Shooting Investigation in Newton
NEWTON, Miss. (July 30, 2026) — A juvenile was taken into custody following a shooting that left one person injured Monday night in Newton, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred on July 28, 2026, at approximately 10:20 p.m., when Newton County E-911 dispatched officers to the area of East First Street Extension and East Drive in response to a report of a person suffering from a gunshot wound.
When officers arrived, they located an adult male with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where his injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening.
Police immediately launched a shooting investigation and quickly identified a person of interest. After officers relayed the information to Newton County E-911, the Newton County Sheriff's Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle carrying the individual and took the suspect into custody without incident.
Authorities said the person's identity is being withheld because the suspect is a juvenile. Additional information, including any formal charges, is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
In a statement, Chief McKenzie Patrick praised the coordinated response by first responders.
"We are thankful for the quick response from our officers, Newton Fire Department, and AmeriPro EMS to the scene, as well as the assistance provided by the Newton County Sheriff's Department," Patrick said.
