6-Year-Old Killed in Smith County Crash

A tragic late-night crash in Smith County has claimed the life of a 6-year-old child.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating, and Smith County emergency officials responded to the scene of the accident, which occurred just after 11 p.m. on Highway 18 near County Road 549. A Jeep Wrangler traveling westbound allegedly ran off the roadway, struck a ditch, and overturned.

The vehicle had three occupants. A 6-year-old child was reportedly ejected during the crash and transported by AmeriPro to Smith County Emergency Hospital. The child was pronounced deceased a short time later. Early reports indicate the child was not wearing a seat belt.

The adult male driver was not injured. A second child in the vehicle sustained injuries, though the extent of those injuries has not yet been released.

UMMC AirCare responded and landed at Smith County Emergency Hospital.

The crash remains under investigation and is being looked into as a possible DUI. More information will be released as it becomes available.
