I-59 Monkey Finds New Home at Animal Refuge

After Harrowing Escape

Jasper County, MS — A rhesus macaque who survived a frightening highway accident in Mississippi has officially begun a new chapter of life at Popcorn Park Animal Refuge. Now named Forrest, the resilient monkey was one of 21 primates being transported for biomedical research when the truck carrying them overturned on November 5 near mile marker 117 on I-59.

The crash caused several monkeys to escape into the surrounding woods, drawing national attention and sparking concern from animal advocates across the country. While most of the animals were quickly located, Forrest remained missing for nearly a week — the final unaccounted-for survivor from the group.

Because he had spent so much time outside the facility, Forrest could no longer be returned to the research program. That’s when Popcorn Park Animal Refuge stepped in to offer him lifelong sanctuary. When rescuers first met him, Forrest carried no name — only the tattooed identification number “NI 62.” Today, he’s settling into his new home in the refuge’s Monkey House, where caretakers say he is slowly but steadily gaining confidence.

Forrest is learning to trust the people and primates around him, engaging more each day with his environment. Staff members report that he has already developed a list of favorite foods, with grapes topping the list.

He has also begun vocalizing, an encouraging sign that he is feeling more secure and expressive in his new surroundings.

For the refuge team, Forrest’s progress is a testament to the healing power of patience, safety, and compassion. After a traumatic journey, this once-nameless survivor is finally getting the chance to live freely — and on his own terms.
