Arrest Made in Shooting of 2-Year-Old in Newton County, Mississippi

On 10-3-2025, the Newton County Sheriff’s Department was made aware by a local hospital of a 2 year old that had received a gun shot wound to the leg.

Investigators from Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) and the Newton County Sheriff’s Department launched an investigation, learning that the incident occurred on 9-16-2025. During the course of the investigation, the following persons have been charged:

Jaycob Boykin - Child Neglect, Child Abuse, Tampering with Evidence (Bond $50,000)

Sylvania Wiltcher - Child Neglect, Child Abuse, Tampering with Evidence (Bond $50,000)

Katelyn Carmichael - Child Neglect, Hindering Prosecution (Bond $30,000)

Gregory Palmer - Child Neglect (Bond $15,000)

Robert Dearing II - Child Neglect (Bond $10,000)

All persons have had an initial appearance before a Justice Court Judge.

The investigation is still ongoing at this time. The child is expected to make a full recovery.
