Meridian, Mississippi Takes Action to Strengthen Safety in School Zones

Meridian, Mississippi- The City of Meridian, Mississippi will begin a new school zone safety enforcement effort on Monday, April 20, 2026, focused on addressing speeding in active school zones and protecting children across our community.

This initiative follows action by the Meridian city Council on March 3, 2026 and reflects a continued commitment by city leadership to prioritize public safety through intentional and proactive measures. Prior to the city council approving the program, speed analysis conducted in school zones revealed that nearly all vehicles traveling in active school zones exceeded the speed limit. With the start of the new school zone speeding enforcement program, Meridian Police will use radar cameras to check speeding and tickets will be mailed to identified violators.

Meridian, Mississippi Mayor Percy Bland stated, “Today, Meridian is making a positive move to improve the safety of all children in school zones. It’s up to all of us to keep children safe in school zones and that starts with following the speed limit. That’s why we are stepping up efforts through an innovative process. Our officers will be in school zones, checking speeds with radar cameras for evidence retention. This initiative will improve public safety for everyone in our community, especially our children as they come and go from school. And I thank our city council for their support and commitment to our children.”

Whether it’s typing and talking on a mobile phone, or playing video games and listening to headphones, many children walking or unloading from a school bus in a school zone are distracted while they’re walking. That makes it even more important for everyone driving in school zones to obey posted speed limits and to always be alert.
