City of Meridian-Government
By now, many of you have likely seen the video circulating on social media showing Meridian Police Department officers pursuing and apprehending a suspect near 14th Street and Front Street.
What the video does not fully capture is the reality law enforcement officers face every day. Officers responded to a report involving a convicted felon allegedly in possession of a firearm. After being placed in handcuffs, the suspect fled on foot and entered a nearby creek in an attempt to evade arrest. An officer immediately pursued the suspect and, with the assistance of responding units, safely took the individual into custody.
While some may view the video as dramatic, the Meridian Police Department views it as a reminder of the dangers officers willingly face in service to our community. Situations can change in seconds, and officers must rely on their training, judgment, and professionalism to protect the public and bring incidents to a safe conclusion.
"We take apprehending criminals seriously because the safety of our community depends on it," said Assistant Chief Dareall Thompson. "All our officers are trained to respond professionally under pressure, and we are proud of the dedication they demonstrate every day while serving the citizens of Meridian."
We commend the officers involved for their courage, professionalism, and commitment to keeping our city safe.
