Meridian Public School District's Soundwaves Summer Arts Camp Concludes with Celebration of Mississippi Arts and Culture

MERIDIAN, Miss. – The Meridian Public School District concluded a successful week of creativity, collaboration, and artistic expression as students wrapped up the inaugural Soundwaves: Sounds of Mississippi 2026 Summer Arts Camp on Friday, June 26, 2026, at The Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Experience (The MAX).

The free weeklong summer arts camp welcomed incoming third through sixth grade MPSD students for an immersive experience celebrating Mississippi's rich artistic heritage.

Throughout the week, students explored music, dance, theater, and visual arts through engaging, hands-on activities led by MPSD instructors and local arts professionals. Campers also had the unique opportunity to meet Mississippi native and New York Times bestselling graphic novelist and illustrator John Jennings, who shared his passion for storytelling and the arts. The camp encouraged students to discover new talents, build confidence, and express themselves creatively while learning about the cultural traditions that have shaped Mississippi.

Participants spent each morning rotating through interactive workshops where they developed artistic skills, collaborated with their peers, and explored multiple forms of creative expression. Students also received breakfast and lunch each day, allowing them to focus on learning, creating, and building lasting friendships.

The week culminated with "Sounds of Mississippi: A Celebration of Music, Culture, and Creativity," a special community showcase on Friday. Families and community members gathered to enjoy student performances and view visual artwork that reflected the skills and experiences students gained throughout the week. The showcase celebrated not only the students' artistic accomplishments but also the importance of arts education in fostering creativity, confidence, communication, and teamwork.

"The arts give every child an opportunity to discover their voice, build confidence, and connect with others in meaningful ways," said Dr. Antonio Altman, Director of Arts for Meridian Public School District. "Throughout the week, our students embraced new experiences in music, dance, theater, and visual arts while celebrating the rich cultural traditions of Mississippi. Watching them grow creatively and confidently, then share their talents with family and friends during our culminating showcase, was truly inspiring. Soundwaves demonstrated that every child has a unique gift, and we are proud to help them find it."

The Soundwaves Summer Arts Camp reflects Meridian Public School District's commitment to providing enriching educational opportunities beyond the traditional classroom. By partnering with The MAX, the district created an environment where students could explore their artistic interests, strengthen their creativity, and gain a deeper appreciation for Mississippi's vibrant cultural legacy.

Meridian Public School District extends its appreciation to The MAX, camp instructors, staff members, volunteers, community partners, and families whose support made the inaugural Soundwaves Summer Arts Camp a memorable and meaningful experience. The district looks forward to continuing opportunities that inspire students to explore, create, perform, and discover their unique talents.
